In the field, the Vlieland/Texel bird was generally considered to be a Daurian Shrike L isabellinus but that was shortly before the publication of the paper by Worfolk (2000). With that paper at hand, this bird could in fact be identified rather straightforwardly as Turkestan Shrike, because of, among others, the head pattern and the contrast between upper- and underparts. It was found on 1 October on the western tip of Vlieland by a small party of birders returning to Texel, Noord-Holland, for the annual Dutch Birding bird week. The shrike was seen flying off towards Texel where, to the delight of many other birders, it was rediscovered the next day. Annual Report 2000.
